The songs on this album were born when I began writing a new tune each week for a gig at a local restaurant. My trio snuck in the new tunes with the jazz standards that were our normal fare. I soon had two dozen songs and a growing sense that I might have something worthwhile.

With the help of Steve Talaga, I was able to assemble an allstar cast of Grand Rapids jazz musicians. Each of these players has earned the community's respect for their talent, experience, and taste. With a group like this, it was hard to go wrong!

We recorded the album at Blue Lake Studios in two days. The album was recorded like many classic jazz albums of the previous century, with all the musicians in one room playing the tunes and soloing without any safety net. Most of the songs were recorded live in one or two takes.

I owe a special thanks to Ed Dublis and Susan Mora (of “Waltz for Ed” and “Susan’s Blues” fame) for being my jazz guinea pigs on most of these songs. The musicians on the recording were not only incredible talents, but were gracious and insightful as they turned notes on a page into living, breathing music. I’d also like to thank my wife, Jen (of “Jenopedie” fame), for loving me as a person and believing in me as a musician.
